Introduction

Imagine you are the first people to settle a land. Think of the most important tasks you will have to take. Find water, find food, and find or create shelter. But what do you do after that? As you have success, more people will want to be a part of your society. What do you do when it starts to get crowded? Who is in charge? Who gets a say in things? One of the most important tasks you will have to complete is to figure out how you will govern your new society.

Task

Your task is to explore various types of governments in order to figure out which would work best for your people. Look at the positives and negatives of each and decide if they are right for your society and what you stand for as a nation. Once you have made your decision you will create a power point presentation outlining which type of government you chose. You should include reasons you chose it and reasons you did not choose the others (think about what you stand for as a nation).

Process

  1. Each group member will research one form of government: Dictatorship, Theocracy, Monarchy, or Democracy. Only 1 person per role please, and if you do not have 4 group members you will all need to share the 4th role!
  2. Each group member will use the links provided to research answers to their questions.
  3. Each group member will share their findings with the other group members to compile a complete view of the forms of government.
  4. The group will complete a project to present to the class. The project will be in the form of a powerpoint presentation using the information they have uncovered. The project should highlight the reasons you chose the form of government for your people and explain why you did NOT choose each of the others.
  5. Each group member will turn in the answers to their research questions on the day they present their project to the class.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have successfully helped to create a society in which order has been established and your people can rest assured that they have someone watching over them to keep them safe. Remember, not everyone will be happy with your decisions but hopefully you have a plan in place to try to keep your people as happy as possible!

For 2 bonus points on this WebQuest...write a one paragraph summary explaining in your own words which form of government would you personally (not your group) like to live under if you were not in a democracy. Please give specific details as to what you like about it and what you would be worried about.
